The Bavarian Forest is a region in southeastern Germany known for its picturesque landscapes, dense forests and crystal clear lakes. The region offers a wealth of outdoor activities and is also rich in culture and history.

Places to visit

The region offers numerous top excursion destinations, including the Bavarian Forest National Park, the largest national park in Germany, the tree-top walk in Neuschönau, the Weißenstein castle ruins (not to be confused with Weissenstein Castle) or the historic city of Regensburg.

Activities

The Bavarian Forest is suitable for those who enjoy nature, hiking, cycling, skiing and other outdoor activities. There are numerous hiking and biking trails, ski slopes and cross-country skiing trails. There are also many attractions and activities for families with children, such as animal and climbing parks.

Events, festivals and traditions

In summer, numerous events take place in the Bavarian Forest. For music fans, there is Rock The Hill, or a little further away, the well-known Rock im Park Festival in Nuremberg. Also of interest are the Drachenstich Festival in Furth im Wald, the oldest folk show in Germany, the Forest Festival in Schönberg and the Lake Festival at Lake Eginger.

Best time to travel

The best time to visit the Bavarian Forest is from May to October, when the weather is mild and nature is in full bloom. In winter there are several ski resorts and numerous opportunities for winter sports activities.

Regional specialities

The Bavarian Forest is known for its hearty cuisine, including Bavarian Brotzeit with pretzels, Obatzda and pork knuckle, as well as regional specialties such as Bayerwald salmon and Zwieselbacher Zwetschgenlikör. Also try the Bavarian beer garden classic, the old-fashioned Radler.
